Choosing a Blinds & Shutters Company in Bournemouth & Poole

Choosing the right blinds or shutters involves more than simply finding a colour or style you like. Different window coverings offer varying levels of privacy, light control, insulation and convenience, so it’s worth comparing your options before making a decision.

When contacting a local supplier, consider the following:

• Product selection: Look for a company offering the styles and materials that suit your windows, including specialist options for bays, conservatories and rooflights.
• Measuring and fitting: Professional measuring is particularly useful for unusually shaped windows, large glazed areas and made-to-measure shutters.
• Materials and finishes: Consider moisture-resistant materials for bathrooms and kitchens, and blackout or thermal options for bedrooms.
• Child safety: Ask about cordless designs, motorisation and appropriate safety devices for any operating chains or cords.
• Guarantees: Check the warranty covering the product, operating mechanisms and installation.
• Quotations: Request an itemised quote that includes measuring, fitting, VAT and any additional accessories.
• Customer feedback: Read recent independent reviews and, where possible, ask to see examples of completed installations.

It is worth obtaining quotations from two or three local suppliers, particularly for larger projects involving several windows or plantation shutters.

FAQs About Blinds & Shutters in Bournemouth & Poole

What is the difference between blinds and shutters?

Blinds are window coverings typically made from fabric, wood, aluminium or synthetic materials. They can be raised, lowered or adjusted to control light and privacy.

Shutters are more rigid window coverings, usually consisting of a fitted frame and adjustable louvred panels. They offer a distinctive appearance and are often chosen as a more permanent window dressing.

How much do made-to-measure blinds cost?

The price depends on the size of the window, the type of blind, the materials selected and whether professional fitting is included.

Standard roller and vertical blinds are generally among the more affordable choices, while specialist fabrics, large window coverings and motorised systems tend to cost more.

For an accurate price, arrange a measurement and quotation with a local supplier.

Are plantation shutters more expensive than blinds?

Plantation shutters generally cost more than conventional blinds because they involve bespoke manufacturing, fitted frames and more substantial materials.

Prices vary according to window dimensions, shutter configuration, material and finish. Hardwood and specialist shaped shutters may cost more than standard designs.

Although the initial investment is often higher, shutters can provide a durable, long-term window covering.

Which blinds are best for bay windows?

Venetian, Roman, roller and pleated blinds can all work well in bay windows, depending on the window arrangement and the amount of privacy and light control required.

Plantation shutters are another popular option, particularly where homeowners want a fitted appearance.

Careful measuring is important because window handles, corners and opening sections can affect which products will fit.

Can blinds be fitted without drilling into window frames?

Some blinds can be fitted using Perfect Fit or similar systems that attach to compatible window glazing beads, avoiding the need to drill into the frames.

These systems are particularly useful for certain uPVC windows and glazed doors.

Compatibility depends on the window design, so ask your supplier to check before ordering.

Are plantation shutters suitable for bathrooms?

Yes, but material selection is important. Moisture-resistant or waterproof shutters are generally better suited to humid environments than products made from untreated natural wood.

A local shutter specialist can advise on suitable materials for bathrooms, kitchens and other areas exposed to condensation.

Can blinds help keep a room warmer?

Certain blinds can help reduce heat loss through windows, particularly cellular or honeycomb blinds and products designed with thermal linings.

Shutters may also provide an additional insulating layer when closed. The level of improvement depends on the product, installation and existing glazing.

Are blackout blinds completely lightproof?

Blackout fabric is designed to block light passing through the material, but some light may still enter around the edges of a conventionally fitted blind.

For bedrooms where maximum darkness is important, ask about cassette systems, side channels or other designs intended to minimise light gaps.

Can existing blinds be motorised?

Some blinds can be adapted for motorised operation, but this depends on their design and condition. In other cases, replacing the blind may be more practical.

Motorised products can be operated using remote controls, wall switches or compatible smart-home systems. Battery-powered options are available for locations without a nearby electrical supply.

How long does it take to have made-to-measure blinds or shutters installed?

Lead times vary according to the product, materials, manufacturer and installation schedule.

Standard made-to-measure blinds may be available sooner than bespoke plantation shutters or specialist motorised systems.

Ask your chosen supplier for an estimated delivery and installation date before placing an order.

Are window blinds safe for young children?

New blinds sold in the UK must comply with applicable child safety requirements. Products with operating cords or chains must incorporate appropriate safety measures.

Cordless, wand-operated and motorised blinds are worth considering in homes with young children.
